Backyard Farm 1

Early in the morning we were awakened by the strange noise outside our house.  It was the children getting fruits in our backyard.

The BALIMBING (Ingles: carambola o starfruit)
Carambola, also known as star fruit, is the fruit of Averrhoa carambola, a species of tree native to the PhilippinesIndonesiaMalaysiaIndiaBangladesh, and Sri Lanka. The fruit is a popular food throughout Southeast Asia, the South Pacific and parts of East Asia. The tree is also cultivated throughout non-indigenous tropical areas, such as in NicaraguaCosta RicaPeruColombiaJamaicaTrinidadEcuadorGuyanaDominican RepublicPuerto RicoHaiti, and Brazil, and, in the United States, in South Florida and Hawaii.

Though I cannot stop them from getting the BALIMBING, I myself get one, I mean two... for this is the first time I am going to harvest fruits from our backyard.

So sweet and yummy isn't it?  Yes, it is.  But I cannot eat it because I have a mouth sore.  Too bad because I have to give it to the children who have fun eating BALIMBING.

A BLOGGER CODE OF ETHICS

A BLOGGER CODE OF ETHICS

A BLOGGER CODE OF ETHICS

Hey this is just a wrap up for my today's activity here in blogging.  It seems that there are new bloggers just like me who are neophytes in this kind of field.  Since not all bloggers are journalist and blogging is so casual that even teenagers are part of this.

Responsible bloggers should recognize that they are publishing words publicly, and therefore we should have certain ethical obligations to our readers, the people we write about, and society in general.

As I have read from Wikipedia Blogger's Code of Conduct:

The Blogger's Code of Conduct is a proposal by Tim O'Reilly for bloggers to enforce civility on their blogs by being civil themselves and moderating comments on their blog. The code was proposed due to threats made to blogger Kathy Sierra[1]. The idea of the code was first reported by BBC News, who quoted O'Reilly saying, "I do think we need some code of conduct around what is acceptable behavior, I would hope that it doesn't come through any kind of regulation it would come through self-regulation."[2]
O'Reilly and others came up with a list of seven proposed ideas:
  1. Take responsibility not just for your own words, but for the comments you are allowed on your blog.
  2. Label your tolerance level for abusive comments.
  3. Consider eliminating anonymous comments.
  4. Don't feed the trolls.
  5. Take the conversation offline, and talk directly, or find an intermediary who can do so.
  6. If you know someone who is behaving badly, tell them so.
  7. Don't say anything online that you wouldn't say in person.

One of the great things about blogging is its quick time to press. The very quickness in which they post leads to highly colorful prose not found in staid, traditional print journalism.

But along with the positive come the negative.

Boring old facts are often thrown in the gutter in favor of more colorful rumors. Charges and attacks are leveled without proper consideration and often without the ability for the targets to properly defend themselves.

Popular blog articles pander to popular taste, rather than raise the bar to provide quality reading material. The same people who cry about intrusions into public privacy maliciously expose the private lives of celebrity and private individual alike.

Like the practitioners of any other art form or media, bloggers should adopt a code of ethics. It is better to self-police than to come to the point that others feel the need to regulate you. Furthermore, it is desirable to stay within the bounds of legality and ethics.

Adapting from a few other sources (cited below), here is my Blogger's Code of Ethics. Feel free to adopt and adapt, as you will. You can copy my seal using the text box below.

[Update: added Do No Harm section Mar-27-2007]

Blogger Code of Ethics

Accuracy

I will post as accurate only information that I know to be accurate. Whenever possible, I will provide sources and links.

If accuracy may be in doubt, I will convey this to the reader.

Attribution

I will not plagiarize material, nor quote without attribution.

Comments

I will delete comments only when they violate the rules of my blog, such as needlessly inflammatory, racist, or spam comments.

Completeness

I will try to ensure that what I post is not only accurate but presents a complete picture, I won't post only part of a story or an argument.

I won't crop photos to misrepresent news.

Confidentiality

I will not reveal details that have been given to me in confidence.

I won't publish private emails unless explicitly permitted to do so. I won't publish names or details when asked not to do so.

Copyright

I will respect other people's copyrights and not post without the copyright holder's permission, except when abiding by the terms of "fair use" (generally small excerpts for journalistic purposes).

Correction

Unless my posting inadvertently violates one of the other codes mentioned, I will generally not change the URLs or delete my postings, although I may correct for grammar, clarity, or spelling.

If corrections need to be made, I will try to use strikeout rather than deleting the material and mark all updates as such.

Disclosure

I will let readers know if or when I use affiliate links or paid posts. I will disclose whenever I am affiliated with a company or received items as gifts.

Do No Harm

I will not attack, embarrass, humiliate, or make others fear for their safety. I will certainly not do so and then accuse my victims of being overly sensitive or needing to have thicker skin.

I will firstly do no harm. Beyond this, I will endeavor to create what is good and beneficial for society, rather than hurt it or waste its time.

Editing

I will try to ensure that my posts are edited for spelling, grammar, and clarity, and that all links are correct.

Fairness

I will always provide all facts relevant to an opinion when criticizing. I will always assume possible confusion or misunderstanding before labeling something or someone as fraudulent. In this case, I will first try to work things out privately, and, if not satisfied, let the facts speak for themselves in as unbiased a manner as possible.

Originality

I will try to provide original material of interest to my readership. I will not simply quote or link to other blogs.

Privacy

I will not pass on gossip about private individuals nor report on embarrassing facts about others. I will not link to or report information that is accidentally leaked.

Respect

I will respect my readers, critics, and subjects of my posts. I will discuss and answer all people with respect, regardless of age, sex, race, religion, nationality, ability, attractiveness, and social or economic status.

I will not respond with rudeness to rudeness. I will apologize when appropriate and stand on principle only when absolutely necessary.

Responsibility

I will affirm what are my own words and posts, and not claim credit for others, or deny responsibility for my own. I will clearly separate what are my own words from others.

Safety

I will not post anything that could endanger others' safety, including identifying information about minors or vulnerable individuals.

End Note About Humorous Posts

I may occasionally post something that appears to violate one of these codes if it is clear that my post is meant to be humorous or satirical. For instance, I may pretend that someone said something that he or she didn't for comic effect. Any post of this sort will be obviously intended as humor and I will ensure that it cannot be misconstrued otherwise.

This will be our guide in making GOOD and RESPONSIBLE BLOG.

My Top Best of the 90's Things

1. Nintendo 64

The N64 revolutionized the gaming industry worldwide and kept people glued to their television screens. With the signature games of Super Mario and Pilotwings, the N64 was a must have for the 90’s generation children, and continues to be a must-have with posturing man-children to this day. The Nintendo 64 will never go down in history as the most technically advanced gaming system ever, nor will it win any awards for its aesthetics or design. But today, it has won the greatest competition of all. This one.

2. Nickelodeon Cartoons

With titles as popular as Hey Arnold!, Doug, and CatDog, Nickelodeon built an empire of cartoon greatness in the 90s that has yet to be challenged by any other era of television. Looking back, it’s quite clear that these cartoons had a huge impact on our personalities during our formative years. Rugrats got us to run away from our parents. The Ren & Stimpy Show attracted us to psychedelic drugs. Rocket Power even convinced us that roller hockey was cool or interesting.

3. Space Jam

This film dominated box offices throughout the country, being the #1 film in the US while in theatres. Space Jam portrays the reluctant return of Michael Jordan to basketball and the path to success that Jordan and the Looney Tunes follow to overtake the Nerdlucks. You know, just like all classic movies.

4. Power Rangers

We’re not talking about Power Rangers Mystic Force or Jungle Fury or Super TimeCop Action Fun in Space with a T-Rex. No, we’re talking about the original, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, with Tommy and Kimberly and Zordon and Rita Repulsa. Every kid wanted to be a Power Ranger, but most had to settle for wearing a pair of Velcro Power Ranger sneakers to school and, at recess, shouting “Putty Patrol!” while punching their friends in the chest instead, a fair compromise.

5. Forrest Gump

The film that spawned over a decade of mocking of the mentally disabled, Forrest Gump is a true classic of the 1990’s. This movie was unique in its ability to invoke both laughter and tears in audiences worldwide; although for some of us, it only invoked laughter. We should also be thankful for Forrest Gump for giving us the line, “Run, Forrest, run!” which will hopefully be yelled at people awkward running/jogging for years to come.

This is just some of the list I have to consider as my BEST 90's THINGS taken at rockmelt.
How about you do you have your 90's THINGS too?

PAPER BAG REIGN in DAVAO CITY?

The ban on plastic bags had led to the increased use of brown paper bags and even newspapers as food wraps, thus raising potential public health and safety hazard, as I see it now.

This is what I got from different stores here in Davao, according to them their BIO-Plastic bags are not yet available.
VELASCO BOOKSTORE STAFF and RG Enterprises told me they are still waiting for their  BIO-PLASTIC bags delivered from Manila.
CHOOKS-TO-GO is using paper plastic bag rather than BIO-PLASTIC BAG.

I have read from an item book about paper bags,  that using brown paper and newspapers as food wrap is not safe given the chemicals they contain and the uncertainty about where the recycled waste paper come from.  And health authorities in the Philippines and in other developing countries have not yet issued any standards that would qualify such recycled paper as safe as food wrap.

In my own observation using paper bags is not good, I am just raising this fact not to bring down paper industry but to point out the unintended and costly consequences of the plastic ban, which in most instances has denied the public a cheap food-grade wrapping material.

Davao is not banning all plastic bags, they say and I quote that, " WE ARE USING BIO, OXO Plastic Bags.  Plastic that is BIODEGRADABLE."

I want everyone knows that TOTAL PLASTIC BAN is for the NON-BIODEGRADABLE PLASTIC only. We can still use plastics that are BIODEGRADABLE.

But just incase in FAST FOOD or any FOOD SHOP, they will use paper bags, I suggest better use White paper it is “food-safe” if it comes from virgin and not recycled paper while brown paper and newspapers could have just been picked up from anywhere and they may also contain harmful chemicals.

That is why you will notice when you order pizza, the food itself is not in direct contact with the brown paper or carton packaging. In the case of pizza, wax paper holds the pizza underneath but the top cover might still get in contact with the food unless, as some outlets do, a plastic item is provided to hold it up.

Sorry for the bad photo (using my mobile cam)
And Julie's Bakeshop by the way is using a BIODEGRADABLE FOOD PLASTIC CONTAINER for their spaghetti.

Davao City is banning NON-BIODEGRADABLE PLASTIC and POLYSTERENE FOAM FOOD CONTAINER just to address the garbage problem.

Some supermarkets and department stores are now using BIODEGRADABLE PLASTIC BAGS, but still they are encouraging customers to bring their own bags.

IMO, Our irresponsible ways of disposing of plastic and other waste is to blame, not plastic. We are the problem; (so) we are also the solution. Banning plastic misses the problem completely. It is an egregious mismatch between problem and solution.

Hope now that DAVAO CITY is implementing this banning of NON-BIODEGRADABLE PLASTIC and POLYSTERENE FOAM, Dabawenyos will follow.

    Money Your Blog

A courage strains after the corpse.

Blogging has become a new international pastime. It is a way to keep up with family and friends, share your opinion with others and make a difference in the global community.

Also, your blog can become a way to supplement or create a major stream of financial support for you.

Well, the first thing you have to have to make money this way is a blog. Blogs were first of all online journals. They still are because you post articles most days of the week and they are kept in reverse chronological order. But, blogging is now so much more.

Including advertisements on your blog is the most obvious way to derive an income from your blogging efforts. Ads can come in the form of text links or banner ads, and advertising options are available that you can easily tap into through pay-per-click, pay-per-post and affiliate programs online. Google AdsenseAmazon AssociateseBay Affiliates and Pay-Per-Post are just a few of the most common advertising programs available to blogger.

Many bloggers add a donation button to their blogs asking readers to make a monetary donation to keep the blog alive. Donations are also solicited with clever taglines such as, "If you like this blog, why not buy me a cup of coffee?" The donation link leads the reader to another website such as PayPal where the individual can easily make their donation.

Another simple way to monetize your blog is by selling merchandise through a service such as CafePress who will work with you to create custom items for you to sell through your blog.
